A man who truly loved God and walked in His footsteps, a man who had a perpetual winning smile and was extremely hands on in his job.
Dave Thorne was a warrior who never backed down from anyone who challenged him verbally or physically, always standing up for righteousness. He had deep conversations with those with whom he shared a kindred spirit, and showed solidarity with the people of Barbados by attending the protest marches in Bridgetown organised by The Marcia Weekes Show and her supporters. All in all, he was staunchly committed to working towards a better Barbados.
Foremost, he was a champion to his family and an admirable father, never neglecting his wife, Jenny, daughter, Rhea and grandson, Renaldo. His widow, still coming to grips with the staggering loss, describes him as having “a warm heart” and always being willing to help and share with others. “He shared freely with the poor and helpless, with the church and other community organisations”
She noted that Dave empathised with the sick and hopeless. His job at the Ministry of Health did not only entail technical management. He cared for the sick in the district hospitals, and often made the time to either share an inspirational word, or joke to make them laugh. An example of Dave’s interest and commitment was bourne out in a newspaper article where he was captured “doing a little jig with the old ladies at the Geriatric hospital” one year at a Kadooment celebration. Jenny recalls that workers in the lower echelons saw Dave as their saviour.”He made sure that,[despite] their inability to comprehend certain technological and other aspects of their lives, they were not left behind.” He helped them calculate their wages, made computer printouts for submission to the accounts department, and wrote testimonials for numerous employees. This is why his untimely passing cuts so deeply. Dave leaves a huge void in the lives of many.
Until we meet again, rest in peace, faithful servant.
Home & Business Landowners (B’dos) Assoc. was formed in memory of Dave Thorne.
